How do I store coffee beans?

Freshly roasted coffee is rich and full of flavour when stored, ground and brewed well, so it’s important you know where and how to store your beans to get the most out of them!

Light, heat and moisture can all degrade the flavour of your coffee, so our main aim when storing beans is to keep them away from those elements.

Store your beans in a cool and consistent spot that doesn’t experience temperature fluctuations or excessive moisture. It might seem like the best option to fill your hopper up with your new beans or sit the bag on top of your machine ready to go, but this is the worst thing you can do! The beans will be exposed to the extra heat from your machine leading to a faster deterioration. Any significant temperature changes will cause your beans to lose their flavour, so we suggest storing in a dark, cool cupboard away from sunlight and heat sources.

Also be sure to keep your beans from anything generating moisture such as steam wands, coffee machines, fridges and freezers. The exception to the fridge/freezer comment is that it’s ok to store in the freezer if in a sealed, airtight container. But the fridge is definitely not a friend to your beans due to the excess moisture and funky fridge smells, so be sure to avoid that one!

So now you know where to keep your beans, what should you store them in?

Our bags are airtight and have a valve to release unwanted gasses, so they are still a great option to store your beans in. We also recommend using an airtight canister such as an Airscape. Airscapes are designed to keep your coffee fresher for longer with a patented lid design that helps to remove excess air from the container and prevent anything getting in, ensuring that freshness you are after.

To get the most out of your beans, we also recommend not only storing them appropriately but using them within 30 days. Beans don’t have an expiry date as such, but the flavour will start to deteriorate a month or so after roasting, so it’s best to adjust the quantity you order and use them up within the month.

The best thing about coffee is that it is subjective and a different experience for every drinker! So take on the tips above but find what works best for you and your setup.
